Travelers in the 1800s and early 20th century experienced a pristine, rushing creek and a 30-foot high waterfall enhanced by a rainbow when they ventured west of Manitou Springs along Fountain Creek. That scene, at what is now El Paso County's Rainbow Falls Recreation Area, is long gone. A large concrete highway bridge built above the falls in the 1930s blocked the light source for the seemingly perpetual rainbow. And now the most dominant colors found at the falls have come out of spray paint cans.
